How To Locate Cheap Float Glass

Below is an excerpt of an excellent post to the sandcarving forum, by Tom Eddleman, on locating float glass in your area:

“Everybody here has probably found good places to get glass locally, but what works for some doesn't work for others. Some of the glass houses will let you go through their glass dumpsters for scrap glass. Some of them will site insurance concerns to keep you out. All that you can do is ask. My local Ace Hardware for instance will give me glass and mirror just about every time that I go in there because it was miscut or odd sized. On the other hand the place where I buy most of my large pieces of glass won't let me near their scrap.

There are places like Big Lots,
Hudson's Salvage, and other discount stores that have mirrors and table tops that are really cheap if they're of a size that you can use.

Keep looking and asking in your area and you'll find the good ones.”

I might add that if you attempt the “dumpster diving” part of Tom’s post, a welcome addition to such an expedition is a Gopher Tool. I have found that this gadget can save you from falling headfirst into the dumpster as you dive for that irresistible piece at the bottom and will also prevent those red splatters which tend to decorate the glass as you enthusiastically drag it out. I think you can also get them at Lowe’s and/or Home Depot.
